On Thursday, November 8th, 2012 Fisher More College presented: A Night with G.K. Chesterton (Performed by Dr. John “Chuck” Chalberg) at its future campus in the historic Our Lady of Victory building in Fort Worth, TX.
The guest performer, Dr. John “Chuck” Chalberg, delights many audiences throughout the United States with his historical impersonations of American and British characters, such as President Theodore Roosevelt and G.K. Chesterton. Dr. Chalberg is a Regis College, Denver, Graduate and has a Ph. D. in history from the University of Minnesota. He has been teaching American history for most of his career at a Minnesota Community College. Dr. Chalberg has written for The Weekly Standard, Crisis, Touchstone, Chronicles and more.
At this public event, Dr. Chalberg’s performance brought to life the Twentieth Century’s foremost apologist for the students and friends of Fisher More College. In his performance, Chesterton journed all the way from England to offer his own unique views on everything from the virtues of things small, whether they be families or pubs, to the evils of things large, whether they be imperialist schemes or socialist states. He defended the Catholic Faith and attacked the “isms” of his day and ours, including feminism, socialism, imperialism, and large-scale capitalism. A man of paradox and humor, the audience was surprised confounded and provoked. Along the way, he was very, very funny.
G.K. Chesterton is apropos for the Year of Faith Lecture Series at Fisher More College because he stands as a layman who was able to communicate the Catholic faith. As an Anglican convert he reveals his conviction to seek the truth even if it means giving up things and suffering criticism from the public. Chesterton’s wit and amazing literary accomplishments (e.g., biographies of St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Francis of Assisi, Orthodoxy, etc.) present the Catholic Church as, “The only sane option for the modern man.”
Fisher More College students are schooled in rhetoric, philosophy, and theology, so that they will not only know the Faith but be able to defend it and persuade others to seek and find the truth. This moving performance is sure to inspire the students and friends of Fisher More College to take up the torch of G.K. Chesterton.
